Alternative Hospital Quarantine (AHQ) in Thailand

Alternative Hospital Quarantine (AHQ) or Hospital Quarantine (HQ) is the quarantine process of Thai and foreign patients with the specific purpose of receiving medical treatment in a designated Thailand private hospital, including their accompanying persons, except for treatment for COVID-19. Patients must be monitored for COVID-19 for 14 days at the hospital.

Update May 2021: AHQ has been suspended due to the COVID-19 situation in Thailand

Thailand is one of the most popular medical tourism destinations with skilled healthcare professionals and modern equipment tools so there was no doubt when the government established an Alternative Hospital Quarantine (AHQ) project to support patients with health problems that need ongoing treatment to receive medical treatment in Thailand.

Medical treatments that require a patient to be admitted to the hospital and applicable for AHQ program include Regenerative Medicine, Alternative Medicine, Cardiovascular Treatment, Musculoskeletal Treatment, Dental Treatment, IVF, Cancer Treatment, Disease with Surgery Conditions, Eye Treatment, Precision Medicine and NCD.

COVID-19 Insurance

Booking quarantine package is only one of mandatory steps for travelers planning a trip to Thailand. All incoming foreign travelers also must provide health insurance covering COVID-19 treatment. The insurance certificate must clearly state that it is for 100,000 USD or more and COVID-19 is covered. The easiest way to meet this requirement is choosing a COVID-19 insurance policy of Thai insurance company and the special insurance package Sawasdee Thailand offered by AXA Insurance is one of the best options currently available.

Important thing to note: the statement on AXA’s website says that if you will be tested positive for COVID-19 during quarantine (a big concern for most of travelers) and won’t have any symptoms, AXA will cover medical expenses incurred based on medical necessity regardless of the showing of symptoms.

Other Quarantine Hotel Packages

Foreigners traveling to Thailand must stay at quarantine hotels at their own expense. Quarantine packages include not only accommodation but also full board meals, transportation to the hotel, stand-by nurses and Covid-19 tests that are conducted by the partner hospital during the quarantine. Detailed information about the quarantine process and constantly updated lists of approved Thailand quarantine hotels can be found here:
