Koh Phayam is located 35 km off the coast from Ranong Town, the capital of Ranong province. When traveling from Bangkok to Koh Phayam, you need to get to Ranong Town first and then take a boat from Ranong to Koh Phayam.

Bangkok to Koh Phayam

Traveling from Bangkok to Ranong province, where Koh Phayam Island is located, is not that complicated, as you have plenty of transportation options to choose from. The best way to get from Bangkok to Koh Phayam depends on your needs:

  • The most comfortable way is taking a direct flight from Bangkok DMK Airport to Ranong Airport.
  • The cheapest way is taking an overnight bus, as it helps you to save one night at a hotel.
  • The most adventurous way is taking a train to the nearest station and then transferring by bus.

Flights to Koh Phayam

As there's no airport on the island, direct flights to Koh Phayam are not available. However, Ranong province has its own airport, Ranong Airport (UNN), so flying there is the fastest and most convenient way to get from Bangkok to Koh Phayam.

It is also possible to fly from Bangkok to Chumphon Airport (CJM), which is located about 122 km from Ranong, or Surat Thani Airport (URT), which is located around 220 km from Ranong, and then take a bus or minivan from there to Ranong, but it is really impractical.

Flights from Bangkok to Ranong

At the moment there is 1 daily flight departing from Don Mueang Airport (DMK) in Bangkok to Ranong. The flights are operated by the low-cost airline AirAsia. Ranong Airport to Koh Phayam

Once you arrive at Ranong Airport, there are usually taxis waiting to take you to the city or directly to the pier.

Bus from Bangkok to Koh Phayam, Ranong

When looking for the cheapest way to get to Koh Phayam from Bangkok, you should know that taking an overnight Bangkok to Ranong bus normally costs significantly less than the flight, and you save one night at the hotel. Of course, this option might not be suitable for light sleepers and is definitely not the most comfortable one.

Most of the buses from Bangkok to Ranong depart from Southern Bus Terminal, while at the moment there's also one departure from Mochit Bus Terminal. The journey from Bangkok to Ranong normally takes about 9-10 hours, but the governmental ones are usually making additional stops and therefore take longer than that. 

When taking an overnight bus from Bangkok to Ranong, you can normally catch the first morning ferry to Koh Phayam and spend your day on the island. 

The Bangkok to Ranong bus route is covered by buses operated by the government bus company Bor.Kor.Sor., also called 999 Bus, and several private bus companies. Most of the departures on this route are scheduled around 17:00-20:00.

Normally you can buy a Bangkok to Ranong bus ticket right at the bus station before departure. Train from Bangkok to Koh Phayam, Ranong

If you are looking to travel from Bangkok to Koh Phayam by train, you should know that there is no direct train to Ranong because the nearest railway stations are located in Chumphon and Surat Thani.

If you are adventurous and want to experience train travel in Thailand, you can take the Southern Line train from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal Station in Bangkok to any of these cities and then transfer to a bus or minivan to reach Ranong from there.

You can take a bus or minivan from Chumphon to Ranong. The distance between these two cities is 122 kilometers. The trip by bus normally takes about 2.5 hours. Boat from Ranong to Koh Phayam

After arriving from Bangkok to Ranong, you need to get to Sapan Plaa Pier to catch a boat to Koh Phayam. The pier is located around 6 km from Ranong Bus Station. You can get there by songtaew (local pickup truck) or motorbike taxi. A trip from the bus station to the pier by motorbike taxi should cost around 80-100 THB, by songtaew - around 20 THB.

Best Way to Travel from Bangkok to Koh Phayam & Ranong

When traveling from Ranong to Koh Phayam, you need to choose from a regular ferry and speedboat.

Regular ferry is a less frequent and slower option, as it takes about 2 hours to get to Koh Phayam. However, taking a ferry is significantly cheaper, as it costs just around 200 THB per person.

Most of the speedboats running between Ranong and Koh Phayam are available during the high season only. Speedboats operate from 7:00 to 17:30 and depart roughly every hour. The ticket normally costs around 450 THB per person, and it takes about 45 minutes to get to Koh Phayam.
