Quarantine for 10 days or 7 days?

Thailand is making it easier for international travelers to enter the country after the starting of a vaccination campaign against the coronavirus. Travelers will be able to shorten their mandatory quarantine period from two weeks to ten or even 7 days, subject to a certificate of vaccination or so called "vaccine passport".

The reduction to 7 days quarantine has been confirmed, so ASQ and ALQ hotels have started offering 7-day quarantine packages as well.

The reduction of quarantine period will be applied as follows:

The reduction of quarantine period

1. Unvaccinated Foreigner (from 1 April)

Duration of Quarantine: 10 days

❌ No Certificate of vaccination

✔️ Covid-19 Free Certificate, issued no later than 72 hours before departure

2. Unvaccinated Thai National (from 1 April)

Duration of Quarantine: 10 days

❌ No Certificate of vaccination

❌ No Covid-19 Free Certificate

It might take some time until quarantine package updates will be made, so Thailand quarantine hotels offering 10-day quarantine packages will be additionally listed here: 10-day Quarantine Packages.

3. Vaccinated Foreigner (from 1 April)

Duration of Quarantine: 7 days

✔️ Certificate of vaccination completed at least 14 days before arrival in Thailand

✔️ Covid-19 Free Certificate, no later than 72 hours before departure

4. Vaccinated Thai (from 1 April)

Duration of Quarantine: 7 days

❌ Covid-19 Free Certificate is not mandatory

❗  Extra Covid-19 test will be done on day 0-1 for vaccinated travelers without Covid-19 Free Certificate

NOTE! Pay attention that the actual length of your stay at quarantine hotel depends on your landing time in Bangkok.

If your actual landing time in Bangkok is between 0:01–18:00, then the arrival day at the hotel is considered as Day 1 so you need to stay for 7 nights, 10 nights or 14 nights, depending on your departure country and vaccination status.

However, if your actual landing time in Bangkok is between 18:01–24:00, your arrival day at the hotel is considered as Day 0 and your 10-day quarantine will actually last for 11 nights / 12 days, and the 7-day quarantine will last for 8 nights / 9 days

14-day Quarantine

The 14-day quarantine period was recommended after the World Health Organization and some experts estimated the incubation period for Covid-19. That's why since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, all travelers coming to Thailand are required to undergo a 14-day (it's actually 15 nights / 16 days if your landing time in Bangkok is after 18:00) quarantine at government-approved facility.

Several countries including Thailand have reviewed their mandatory quarantine periods and reduced them from the original 14 days. However, it's important to note that this shortening of the quarantine period in Thailand will NOT be applied for those coming from country with a COVID variant, who will still need to complete a 14-day quarantine in accordance with the original regulations.

Update! The list of restricted countries was published by Department of Disease Control Ministry of Public Health on 29 March 2021 (announcement) and currently includes the following countries:

  • South Africa
  • Zimbabwe
  • Mozambique
  • Botswana
  • Zambia
  • Kenya
  • Rwanda
  • Cameroon
  • Congo
  • Ghana
  • Tanzania

The list should be updated monthly.

If you will be traveling from one of above-listed countries, on the arrival to Thailand you will have to stay full 14 days in quarantine.

Effective Date

The reduction of quarantine period from 2 weeks to 10 days or 7 days is effective for arrivals from 1 April 2021.

IMPORTANT UPDATE! For both foreigners and Thai travelers arriving to Thailand the mandatory quarantine period has been increased back to 14 days starting from 1 May 2021. For more details check Thailand Increased Quarantine Period back to 14 days!
