The distance from Hue and Hoi An is only 126 km but don’t let the short distance to fool you. Traveling in Vietnam can take longer than expected as often the roads are not in the best condition. However, the route between Hue and Hoi An has improved significantly in recent years and currently there are many convenient transportation options for getting from Hue to Hoi An.

Taking a bus from Hue to Hoi An is one of the most popular choices when traveling between the cities. It is also the cheapest way to get from Hue to Hoi An, that’s why taking a bus is great if you're traveling on a budget.

The downside of traveling by a local bus is that you might have to wait a bit longer until they pick up passengers to start the trip and most of local buses are passing the Hai Van tunnel to get to Hoi An fasters so you do not get an opportunity to admire the natural beauty on the way. Standard local buses are often a bit cramped.

There are also tourist buses that use the mountain road at Hai Van Pass and stop at several locations, giving you a chance to get off the bus and take pictures. If you will be taking a tourist bus from Hue to Hoi An, the journey will be longer as it can take about 6-7 hours instead of 4 hours.

Private Transfer from Hue to Hoi An

When traveling in a group, much more convenient option is booking a private transfer from Hue to Hoi An as you get a modern air-conditioned vehicle with a professional driver to travel between the cities hassle-free. The transfer between Hue and Hoi An normally takes about 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours so you have more time to explore the town.

From Hue to Hoi An by Motorbike

If you feel adventurous, you can travel from Hue to Hoi An by motorbike. The motorbike rental price is about 80,000-150,000 VND per day.

When traveling from Hue to Hoi An by motorbike, you can go by the Hai Van Pass or the tunnel. If you follow the Hai Van Pass, you can stop and rest at the back of the pass to admire the beautiful scenery of Lang Co and Hai Van Gate. As this road is quite dangerous, it is best to move via the pass during the day.

If you will choose to drive via Hai Van tunnel, drive to the Hai Van Pass Tunnel Management Office and park your motorbike there. The truck will take your motorbike to the other side of the tunnel, and you will be transferred by a bus to get your motorbike back on the other side.

Taxi from Hue to Hoi An

Many tourists decide to take a taxi from Hue to Hoi An. You can easily get a taxi without prior booking and travel completely on your own schedule. You can decide where you want to stop and which route to choose (Van tunnel or to Hai Van Pass). However, the taxi fare will often be higher than you would be paying for a private transfer.

Train from Hue to Hoi An

There is no railway station in Hoi An. The nearest train station is in Da Nang, which receives several trains a day from Hue. And the train route from Hue to Da Nang is one of the most spectacular routes in Vietnam.

The scenery may make this trip worthwhile, but in general it’s time-consuming. For getting from Hue to Da Nang, you will need about 3 hours, and then you will need to transfer to Hoi An.

At Da Nang Railway Station finding a taxi won’t be difficult but you can pre-book a private transfer to take you to Hoi An for a fixed price that in most cases is lower than taxi fare.

The cheapest way for getting from Da Nang to Hoi An is taking the direct public bus No. 1. The nearest bus stop is at 162 Ong Ich Khiem, less than 10-minute walk from Da Nang Railway Station. The ticket can be easily purchased on the bus. The bus fare from Da Nang to Hoi An is 18,000 VND per person but tourists are normally overcharged and have to pay the tourist price which is 30,000 VND per person.
