In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the number of fake calls from scammers pretending to be banks, police, post office or authorities to mobile users in Thailand. If you are being bothered by unwanted calls to your Thai number when being in Thailand, you can easily block the spam calls.
The Royal Thai Police has coordinated with the National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission (NBTC) and the mobile phone service providers of all networks to set phone numbers starting with +697 to be numbers calling from abroad according to the resolution of the meeting dated 5 September 2022.
How to block spam callers on the phone
You can easily block international calls by dialling *138*1# and pressing “call” so that you will not receive calls from abroad. This approach is one of the measures introduced by The Royal Thai Police to prevent call center gangs from deceiving people.
However, keep in mind that if you set to not receive calls from international numbers, your friends or family abroad will not be able to make calls to you as well.
How to unblock callers on the phone
If there is a need to contact someone who is abroad, you can press *138*2# to unblock the number.
Tips to avoid becoming a scam victim
Avoid answering calls from unknown foreign phone numbers, unless the number is in your contact list.
Do not give any of your personal information such as ID card number, bank account number or credit card number to unknown parties.
Download application like "Whoscall", which can be installed free of charge, as an initiative to help you identify who is calling you and block unwanted numbers.
