Even if exchange rates here were reasonable, they were not the best you could get in Ho Chi Minh City. You just need to cross the small street to get better exchange rates on another corner of the same intersection.

If you will find yourself in the area next to Saigon Opera House and the iconic Nguyen Hue street, you won’t need to go to Ben Thanh Market to exchange your foreign currency to Vietnamese Dong at a fair rate. The mid-market USD exchange rate at the time of our visit in Saigon was 23,243 VND for 1 US Dollar, so the best rate offered there (23,130 VND/USD) was only by 113 VND or about 0.5% lower than the mid-market exchange rate. For every 100 US Dollars exchanged here you’re losing only about 0.44 USD.

However, the best exchange rate is offered only for large US Dollar notes so bring 50 USD or 100 USD bills to get the best value for your money.

The mid-market EUR exchange rate during our visit was 25,666 VND for 1 Euro, so the best exchange rate offered in Ho Chi Minh City (25,452 VND/EUR) was by 214 VND or about 0.8% lower than the mid-market rate. For every 100 Euro exchanged here you’re losing 0.83 EUR.

The mid-market JPY exchange rate at the time was 214.37 VND for 1 Japanese Yen, so the exchange rate offered in Saigon (211.74 VND/JPY) was by 2.63 VND or by only about 1.2% lower than the mid-market rate.

Exchange of other currencies
