You will not find banks in the ancient town of Hoi An, where most of the tourists are staying and spending their time. However, a significant part of shops and tour agents located in the ancient town are acting as money changers and offer currency exchange service.

We came to Hoi An after spending a couple of days in Hue and we had plenty of Vietnamese Dongs with us because we found a really good money changer in Hue. None of money changers in Hoi An was offering as competitive exchange rate as we’ve got in Hue so if you will be traveling the same way like we did, exchanging money in Hue might be a good idea.
Even if currency exchange rates in Hoi An were not the best we could find in Vietnam, they were acceptable. However, we would recommend shopping around a bit before deciding where to exchange money as the exchange rate might vary quite a lot, especially if the currency you are going to exchange is not US Dollar.

Most of money changers in Hoi An were offering 23,000 VND for 1 US Dollar but you could get less than that too if not being attentive. As the mid-market USD exchange rate at the time of our visit was 23,163 VND for 1 US Dollar, USD exchange rate in Hoi An was by 163 VND or by about 0.7% lower than this. You can get a better rate elsewhere but the exchange margin lower than 1% can hardly be called bad.
EUR exchange rate in Hoi An
Most of money changers in Hoi An were offering 25,200 VND for 1 Euro but we managed to find a couple of places giving 25,300 VND/EUR exchange rate. The mid-market EUR exchange rate during our visit was 25,600 VND for 1 Euro, so the best exchange rate we could find in Hoi An was by 300 VND or by about 1.2% lower than the mid-market rate. Like everywhere in Vietnam, EUR exchange rate was worse than USD exchange but still pretty good.
GBP exchange rate in Hoi An
The best GBP exchange rate we could find in Hoi An was 29,200 VND. As the mid-market GBP exchange rate at the time was 29,887 VND for 1 British Pound, the exchange rate in Hoi An was by 687 VND or by about 2.3% lower than the mid-market exchange rate. GBP exchange rate was by far less competitive than exchange rate of USD or EUR.
AUD exchange rate in Hoi An
Australian Dollar exchange rate in Hoi An varied more as we saw exchange rates in the range of 15,300 VND – 15,700 VND. As the mid-market AUD exchange rate during our visit was 15,799 VND for 1 Australian Dollar, the best exchange rate offered in Hoi An was by 99 VND or only by about 0.6% lower than the mid-market rate. When choosing the right money changer in Hoi An, you can save about 2.5% of your money.

Exchange rate of Canadian Dollar in Hoi An was 17,000-17,200 VND. The mid-market CAD exchange rate at the time was 17,516 VND for 1 Canadian Dollar, so the best exchange rate we found in Hoi An was by 316 VND or by about 1.8% lower than the mid-market rate.
